When it comes to our health and fitness it is really easy to buy into the belief that the more you do or the more complicated your plan, the more effective it will be. But the truth of the matter is that no amount of complication, in any aspect of life, leads to better results. Often times, the most simple approach yields the best results. How do I know this you might ask? Well, all I have to do is look at my personal journey towards better health and fitness.
As a long time believer that more was better, aka not simple was better, I was constantly trying to do more to reach my health and fitness goals, rather than try and hone in on the things that were really going to make a difference. After years of believing in more, I made the conscious decision to try less. I figured if more wasn’t really paying off (it hadn’t led to sick pack abs and an unbreakabke metabolism), it couldn’t hurt to try less. And honestly, who wouldn’t want to do less and get equal or better results? So less it was. And my approach to less was not to completely abandon my efforts, but to put less effort into it. I knew the things that would move the dial the most were not complicated things. They are actually quite the opposite, they are intuitive if you can learn to trust your intuition.
With a new mission of less, I focused on these core truths I know equate to results:
1. Results are made in the kitchen, not the gym.
2. You can’t out-train a bad diet.
3. You need to eat in accordance with your activity level to maintain your weight. You need to be in a calorie deficit to lose weight. You need to be in a calorie surplus to gain weight. Plain and simple.
4. Daily movement is good for the mind, body and soul.
I have always been great about daily movement and loved exercise. If I could out train a bad diet I would undoubtedly be part of that camp! And to this day, I get great joy out of incorporating exercise into my life. But I know more today than I knew back then and know that as much as I love exercise and the effect it can have on your mind, body and spirit, it is by and far not the quickiest way to reach your health and fitness goals. Figuring out your food however, is!
So how do you figure out your food??? This can be a very daunting question for most people and one that brings up a lot of anxiety and even more questions. Because instead of simplifying things, we often like to complicate them. The answer is simple.
Be a student of yourself and make adjustments along the way.
As you know, there are a billion different diets anyone could follow at any given time, but not one of them was designed specifically with you in mind. Most rely on some form of deprivation and set you up for the dreaded binge and purge cycle I have talked about numerous times on this site. It’s like a hamster wheel you can never get off! Excuse my language, but f#*k that! I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be on any kind of hamster wheel, treadmill, roller coaster or anything else people refer to when discussing these yo yo type diets. I mean a roller coaster is supposed to be fun, but what is fun about the ups and downs of riding the diet roller coaster? I can’t think of even one thing that’s fun about it besides deciding never to get on it again!
