Yesterday on Facebook I teased the topic of perseverance, or better yet, what I like to call Sticktoitiveness (stick-to-it-ive-ness). This is somewhat of a hot topic for me right now as well as for many other people in my life. So I thought it would be a worthwhile topic to discuss this week, thinking as a community it doesn’t hurt to share our struggles and help each other get to the other side. Specifically I want to discuss this concept in the frame of health and fitness, seeing as this is a place where I want to openly discuss these topics, because I know this is the very thing that derails many on the path to a stronger you.

With the busy, hectic lives we lead, the number one reason I hear people lack sticktoitiveness in their health and fitness pursuits, is time. I hear everything from “If I only had the time” to “Nice that you have the time” and everything in between. For those of you that fall into this category of not-enough-time-ness, I’d like to pose the question, what makes you feel like you don’t have enough time? Do you truly not have enough time or is it just not a priority? Or do you start and then go off track when time management becomes an issue? Here’s how I see it, and you can agree or agree to disagree ;).

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS NOT ENOUGH TIME.

Yep, I said it! Now, you may be cursing me and the screen as you read this, but let me explain why I believe this.

We all have the same 24 hours in a day, correct? Yes, how we slice up the different pieces of our day will inadvertently vary from person to person. But I think we can all agree, we share the same 24 hour window to get things done (she says while trying not to sound presumptive :)). The main difference between the folks who find the time for their health and fitness pursuits is that they make it a priority (cue second round of cursing me and your screen!). I know, I know…this puts us right back to square one, and the adage “Well, if I only had more time, I would make it a priority.” Here’s the problem with that mentality. Life being the way it is, is always going to throw you a curve ball! One day it’s smooth sailing and everything is going exactly the way you want it to, the next you’re knee-deep in a shit storm, just trying to keep your head above water. But you know what? It’s in these shit storms that your sticktoitiveness to your health and fitness can be a beacon of light to lead you out of the storm. While everything else in your life is seemingly spiraling out of control, this can be the one area where you feel firmly in control. And better yet, as if all of you didn’t know already, exercise produces endorphins and endorphins make you happy! I don’t know about you, but when the shit hits the fan in my life, I know I could use anything that makes me even just a tiny bit happy.

If you find yourself in this category of people, where time is your enemy, I challenge you this week to take a deep look at how you manage your time and where your priorities really are. Does everything you prioritize above your own health and fitness deserve to be up there? Or can you find room to elevate your health and fitness higher and demote the things that are not serving you. As I see it, not much should be more important than taking care of yourself. If you are not of sound body and mind, how much good are you to yourself and others? Prioritizing your health and fitness just shows how much you love and care for yourself, and as a result you can better love and care for others.

Phew, I know that was pretty difficult stuff to hear and I get it if you are just not in a place to take your health and fitness to this level. It is never my intent to strong arm anyone into anything, merely make you aware that you are capable and that anything you put your mind to can be achieved. Self-doubt is the enemy to achievement. Stop doubting and start achieving.

Now, if you are the type that says, Lauren, I have the time management stuff down pat, and I consistently make my health and fitness a priority, awesome! You are way ahead of the game compared to other people, but let me ask you this, do you feel, despite making it a priority, it is making you a stronger version of yourself physically and mentally? Sometimes we have to dig deep to see if we are really empowering ourselves to make positive strides or if we are just going through the motions. And if you are just going through the motions, how can you make it mean more to you so that it does more for you?

I always encourage people to find the things they love and DO THAT! Just because someone writes you their perfect workout regimen or meal plan, it does not mean it is perfect for you! Some people are blessed with incredible willpower and great genetics and others are not so lucky. Most of us have to work really hard to get the results we desire and sometimes the effort outweighs the desire. We’ve all been there! We know what it takes to get our body or our mind where we want it, but we fall short on execution. It is impossible to be perfect all the time, so instead of focusing on being perfect, why not focus on being better? If only just a little bit better each day. Little steps can have a way of turning into profound milestones with enough sticktoitiveness.

So this week, no matter where you are at on your journey to a stronger you, see if you can practice a little more sticktoitiveness in your life. Even if just small things, the more #forwardmomentum you can generate, the more likely you’re going to see a transformation. Stick with it, even when the going gets tough. You’re worth it, you just have to believe you are.

Stronger by sticking with it!
